On April 22nd at 9:10 p.m. on ORF 2

Father of the boy in the dog box in an interview with Christoph Feurstein

“It feels like no one cares,” says the father of the boy, who is said to have been locked in a dog crate and tortured by his mother. The father of the now 14-year-old sees mistakes in child and youth welfare. Why didn’t the threat reports from the school and the hospital reach him? A commission of experts should clarify the open questions. Instead, their report contains general recommendations. Now a specialist supervisory authority is once again looking into the question of whether all legal and professional standards were adhered to. Many questions about the suffering of the boy from Lower Austria remain unanswered. His victim’s lawyer is now demanding 150,000 euros in compensation from the state of Lower Austria. Christoph Feurstein and Pia Bichara explore the open questions in “Theme”.

Convicted breeder is allowed to keep listed dogs again

“In general, I would like to keep dogs again, including American Staffordshire Terriers,” says the owner of the animals that bitten a jogger to death in the municipality of Naarn on October 2, 2023. The Upper Austrian woman successfully sued against a dog ban imposed by the municipality. She was legally sentenced to 15 months in partial prison for negligent homicide. Now the question arises: Are the current laws enough to take action against irresponsible dog owners? Or are more rigorous regulations necessary, especially with regard to so-called “list dogs”? Markus Waibel asked for “Topic”.

Spinraza injection fought for – the Georg Polic case

Georg Polic is 18 years old and has made legal history. “For the first time we were able to enforce a denied treatment in court,” says Karin Prutsch, his lawyer. “Thema” reported: Georg Polic has suffered from spinal muscular atrophy since birth. The responsible hospital company KAGes originally refused to treat the boy from Styria with the expensive drug Spinraza. “That would have meant certain death for him,” says his lawyer. In a sensational trial, the Supreme Court decided that not only ongoing treatment, but also donations-financed injections that have already been given must be paid for by the KAGes. The mother Claudia Polic is relieved: “George can now arrange his life the way he always wanted.” Sonja Hochecker visited the family again.

Robert Wild – our man on “Mars”

“It is the spirit of discovery that drives us. We want to find out whether we are or were alone in the universe. Therefore: Off to Mars!” That’s what the Innsbruck physicist Robert Wild says. As a so-called analog astronaut, he is testing in the Armenian desert how people could research and survive on Mars. It is now the 15th mission of this type under the leadership of the Austrian Space Forum. More than 250 scientists from 26 nations are involved. Susanne Kainberger and Fred Lindner visited Robert Wild for “Thema” during his test mission in Armenia and at home in Innsbruck.
