Result 6th PRAEVENIRE Digital Health Symposium: Digitalization as a patient’s right

Experts emphasized that digitalization must primarily serve patients and healthcare staff, not the processes or the system.

Vienna (OTS) Sessions on the topics “Artificial Intelligent in Medicine”, “European Health Data Space: the patient summary is coming”, “The national e-health strategy” and “SAP changes health strategy – consequences for hospitals and HIS systems” were also included On the second day of the symposium, the topic was “Hot Irons”.

The final plenary session of the 6th PRAEVENIRE Digital Health Symposium was focused on the vision for the healthcare system. “We are in the middle of the transformation process – AI is here to stay,” explained Dr. Jörg Depatin, healthcare entrepreneur and former head of the Health Innovation Hub Berlin. He said it was about supporting and not replacing doctors. When discussing resources, one should not forget that it is not only financial resources that are becoming scarce, but also personnel.

“When developing digital tools, the people who work with them must be more involved,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Friederike Thilo, from the Bern University of Applied Sciences. Human-machine interaction in healthcare is special because the complexity is high. In addition, the benefits of digital solutions must reflect the reality of everyday life and solve real problems.

As a doctor and state councilor for health in Styria, Dr. Karlheinz Kornhäusl said that a sense of proportion is required and that people must always be the focus. You also have to be careful not to create more problems as a result of digitalization. The role of politics must be to create framework conditions. Styria shows, not least, how digitalization can develop in the healthcare system under good conditions.

Vision of digitalization in the healthcare sector

In the final discussion, Dr. Clemens Martin Auer, President of the European Healthforum Gastein: “If we do not manage the curve in digitalization and thus relieve the burden on staff, then the system will collapse” and appealed that the sometimes noticeable resistance to digitalization must be overcome. When developing digital tools, everyone affected must be included right from the start, explained Dr. Erwin Rebhandl, President AM Plus. Healthcare providers also have to deal with the possibilities and be able to use the tools. In his summary of the 6th Digital Health Symposium, Dr. Franz Leisch, Chief Digital Officer of PRAEVENIRE, said that the common thread that ran through all events was that “digitalization is a patient’s right”.
