Vice Mayor Kathrin Gaál invites: “’Garteln um die Eck’ starts the new season. Grätzl experts give free Gartel tips!” | City vienna

Greening tree discs, revitalizing the neighborhood: The application for tree disc sponsorship is now also available online

Vienna (OTS) “I am very impressed by how much commitment, love and energy the Viennese invest in the garden. With their commitment, they make their living environment more colorful and livable for everyone and strengthen coexistence in the community. If you would like to garden yourself and plant a tree slice or get gardening tips, the GB* experts are the right place for you. They provide free advice on gardening in our city,” said Vice Mayor and Women and Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaál.

The motto is “Greening tree slices, revitalizing neighborhoods”. Area management for urban renewal (GB*) for the successful “Gardens around the Corner” initiative as well as for inner courtyard and facade greening. Residents who have neither a balcony nor a garden, or who simply want to help shape the neighborhood, can sponsor a tree slice and garden in public spaces. All you need is a design agreement, which can be applied for at GB* and now also online at wien.gv.at.

In Vienna, around 1,800 tree slices are currently being greened and cared for by residents. The green oases are not only beautiful to look at, they also contribute to climate-friendly neighborhoods. And: The neighborhood is strengthened – because people come together when gardening.

“Garden around the corner”: Apply for tree disc sponsorship online or at GB*

Anyone who would like to green a tree slice must conclude a design agreement with the City of Vienna, which can now also be applied for online since spring 2024. Using the form on wien.gv.at, a street tree is selected from the displayed plan by entering the address and the application for tree disk greening is submitted. The Vienna City Gardens check whether the selected tree disk is available, the GB* informs the applicant after a positive check and provides technical support. All information about the new online service: www.gbstern.at/baumscheibe

Alternatively, the design agreement can still be concluded directly with GB*. Those interested should choose a street tree near their own home and send the tree number (visible on the tree), the address of the location and, if possible, a photo (of the soil surrounding the tree) by email to the nearest GB* in the district. If the tree disc is available, a design agreement can be signed.

All information is also available as a printed folder to download (www.gbstern.at/stadtgarteln) or pick up at the GB* locations.

The tree disc gardeners at all GB* locations are provided with information materials, plant tips and a “Gardening around the corner” sign to identify their tree disc.

The tree disc application can be applied for online via the City of Vienna website. Here you can find all the information: www.gbstern.at/baumscheibe

Free tips for “gardening around the corner”

The GB* (Urban Renewal Area Services) provide free advice on gardening in the city in their restaurants and at local events throughout the year. The natural design of tree discs is very popular. “The denser the network of habitats, the better plants and bees, butterflies, etc. can maintain their populations. Every garden and every flowering tree makes an important contribution to this,” says Alexandra Scheucher, an employee of the technical urban renewal department.
On www.gbstern.at/gartelinfos there is one Planting list – compiled according to locations and criteria of organic gardening.

Gardening also strengthens togetherness in the Grätzl. Many tree disk gardeners can report this, including Alcan Salih and Ms. Melanie, who look after two tree disks together on Ullmannstrasse in the 15th district. “These small, neighborhood oases are very valuable, especially in the times we live in today. You get to talk to people, you can sensitize others to the topic and maybe even motivate them to garden together,” say the two passionate tree disc gardeners.
