Post opens a new parcel logistics center in Vienna-Inzersdorf

Green and innovative: the heart of Viennese parcel logistics

Vienna (OTS) Austrian Post AG officially opened its new parcel logistics center in Vienna-Inzersdorf today. In a 22,000 m² hall, 260 employees in two shifts ensure that over 250,000 packages per day are sorted and delivered to their destination. The investment volume was around 70 million euros. The celebrations took place in the presence of the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, and the entire board of Austrian Post AG. The spiritual blessing was given by the Vienna Cathedral priest Toni Faber.

The opening of the new parcel logistics center in Vienna-Inzersdorf underlines the strength of Vienna as a business location and its role as an important hub for trade and logistics. This center will not only increase the efficiency of postal services, but also create new jobs and thus make an important contribution to added value in Vienna. This logistics center is proof of Austrian Post’s trust in Vienna as a business location and a sign that we are working together to continue to strengthen Vienna’s economic engine.“, says Michael Ludwig, Mayor and Governor of Vienna.

With the new parcel logistics center in Vienna, we are completing the expansion program of the past few years. We have invested a total of around 500 million euros in order to always be one step ahead of parcel growth. We have not only succeeded in creating a high-performance, but also sustainable logistics center. This is demonstrated by a comprehensive green space concept, a green roof and a photovoltaic system with an output of two megawatts peak.“, says Georg Pölzl, General Director, Österreichische Post AG.

Modern logistics in 2024 has a lot to do with technology. We process thousands of tracking events every day at this location and determine volumes fully automatically. This requires not only personnel, but also IT power. That’s why we’re placing an ever-increasing focus on technology, as this innovative logistics center shows.“, explains Walter Oblin, Deputy General Director, Board of Directors for Letters & Finance, Österreichische Post AG.

Our new parcel logistics center is one of the most innovative and efficient locations in Europe! We can now process up to 25,500 packages per hour using a hybrid model consisting of three sorting machines. Autounloaders and roll container tippers support our employees and accelerate processes. With this location we are setting new standards for the entire industry.“, says Peter Umundum, Board Director for Parcel & Logistics, Österreichische Post AG.

Innovations: From sorting machines to making work easier

The groundbreaking ceremony for the location took place in March 2022 and it has now been officially opened. In the first expansion stage, the new parcel logistics center has a sorting capacity of up to 25,500 parcels per hour or 250,000 parcels per day, which corresponds to more than doubling the previous sorting capacity at the Vienna-Inzersdorf location. For the first time, an innovative hybrid model is being used, in which three different sorting machines run depending on the package size: A cross-belt sorter processes up to 15,000 packages per hour, and another 9,000 packages per hour go through its own small parts sorter, which handles smaller packages with a maximum weight of five kilograms sorted. Additional specialization is achieved through a bulky goods sorter that processes up to 1,500 particularly large and bulky packages per hour.

The employees receive support from two modern AutoUnloaders: intelligent, automatic package unloading systems that unload swap body bridges (WAB). This means that up to 6,000 packages can be unloaded fully automatically per hour. Four roll container tippers also enable the efficient unloading of roll containers and pallets.

Green roof and photovoltaic system at the post office’s largest location

Landscape architects and gardeners have developed an ecologically sustainable green space concept for the open spaces and roof areas of the parcel logistics center. For example, the roof areas were greened and equipped with photovoltaic modules. A photovoltaic system with an output of two megawatts peak was installed on the roof of the new building; together with the existing photovoltaic system of the mail logistics center, a total output of 2.8 megawatts peak is achieved. The building is heated with an air-water heat pump.

The green areas on the site were designed with native or site-appropriate trees, perennials and wildflowers, which impress with their splendor of flowers in the spring and their lush greenery in the summer and provide a natural habitat for animal species such as wild bees and bats.

The total area in Vienna-Inzersdorf covers 200,000 m², making it the largest Post office location in Austria. 1,500 people work on the site, where there is now a parcel logistics center, a letter logistics center, the international center, the Transportlogistik Ost truck fleet and the Post Business Solutions printing and enveloping center. The hall of the former parcel logistics center is currently being optimized for continued operation as a delivery base, and the Vienna location of Medien.Zustell GmbH will also be moving from Simmering to Inzersdorf.
