Ernst-Dziedzic/Bürstmayr on 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Stay vigilant – more than ever!

“December 10 marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as deadly conflicts in Ukraine, terrorist attacks on the people of Israel, war against Hamas in Gaza and crimes against its own people in Iran shake the world. This Charter, which sets out the fundamental rights and freedoms of all people around the world, remains an unshakable pillar of hope and commitment to peace and justice,” said Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic, Green Party spokesperson for human rights.

The current sources of conflict, the suffering of the civilian population, and the systematic use of rape as a repressive tactic and weapon of war paint a shocking picture. They once again urge the tireless commitment to peace, the protection of livelihoods and a fair globalization. “We are currently faced with huge challenges. Human rights are becoming increasingly threatened worldwide. We must position ourselves clearly and exhaust all diplomatic options, support and promote peace negotiations, reconnaissance missions and reconstruction initiatives,” explains Ernst-Dziedzic and continues: “An important example here is the investigation of war crimes against the Ukrainian population. Austria has been involved in this reconnaissance since the beginning of the war.”

Ernst-Dziedzic is currently at a human rights conference in Kiev, which is dedicated, among other things, to collecting evidence, which is the first step towards investigating war crimes and prosecuting them.

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights may be 75 years old, but it is still as important as it was on its first day. It was created after the unprecedented horror of the Shoah and is intended to achieve one thing above all: protect human dignity in all its facets. Today, human rights are again under attack from many sides. We must not only remain vigilant, but also clearly identify these dangers. Human rights are the backbone of our constitution, our way of life – and they apply to everyone, simply because they are human. This principle is non-negotiable for us,” says Georg Bürstmayr, spokesman for the Green Party for Home Affairs.
