Regular exercise and its health benefits – sports doctors can help

Regular exercise as a key measure for maintaining and restoring health

Krems (OTS) Regular exercise is a central element of a healthy lifestyle. It helps to keep body weight stable, improves energy metabolism through a direct effect on the muscle cells and thus prevents the development of common diseases such as diabetes, changes in lipid metabolism and high blood pressure, which in turn can lead to heart attacks, strokes or cancer. If such risk factors or illnesses already exist, regular exercise can often support their therapy.

For healthy people, daily exercise is recommended, ideally lasting 30 – 60 minutes, consisting of alternating endurance, strength, balance and mobility. Long periods of sitting should be interrupted by short breaks for movement. For older people, sick people or people who have been inactive for a long time, adjustment and gradual getting used to is necessary so that the sudden activity does not provoke other problems, such as joint or back pain. Where can you find advice and support?

There are almost 2,000 sports doctors in Austria, spread across all federal states. On the one hand, we have sports doctors from the fields of orthopedic trauma surgery and physical medicine who take care of problems of the musculoskeletal system, be it sports injuries or painful overloading of joints or the back. On the other hand, there are sports doctors specializing in general medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics. They advise and support people who practice sports and those who want to exercise of all abilities on how to start and continue physical activity sensibly, tailored to their personal needs.

A list of all doctors working in sports medicine can be found on the homepage of the Austrian Society for Sports Medicine and Prevention (ÖGSMP) – “www.sportmedizingesellschaft.at”.
