Career orientation next to nursing homes and student hostels | ÖJAB

The ÖJAB moved its vocational education and “AusbildungsFit” to the new intergenerational Meidlinger district of Wolfganggasse

Vienna (OTS) The BPI of the ÖJAB – Vocational Education Institute of the Austrian Young Workers’ Movement (https://www.oejab.at/bpi) supports around 900 young people and adults in its Vienna training center. You will receive professional orientation, technical and commercial vocational training, German courses and specialist language training. In addition, the participants receive social-educational support and support in having their existing skills recognized and entering the Austrian labor market. On these topics, the ÖJAB BPI works with various sponsors, clients, companies and institutions in the labor market policy context in Austria as well as with numerous European partner organizations.

In addition to the BPI, the ÖJAB specifically targets around 70 disadvantaged young people aged 15 and over with special social-educational needs in a second facility: In “AusbildungsFit ÖJAB – Education, Perspectives, Integration” (https://www.oejab.at/ausbildungsfit) they catch up on what they missed at school, learn about professional fields, receive personal coaching and strengthen their physical health through sport. This is how they find their way into an independent life. “Training Fit” is a measure as part of the Professional Integration Network – NEBA and is supported by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Both measures, which were previously located at Längenfeldgasse 27 in Vienna, have now been moved to the new inclusive Vienna district of Wolfganggasse in Vienna Meidling, to the “Life Campus” there. The ÖJAB BPI can now be found at Hermi-Hirsch-Weg 3 and “AusbildungsFit” at Hermi-Hirsch-Weg 1.

Get to know care and craftsmanship in practice

The ÖJAB nursing home Neumargareten, a base for home nursing care and the student residence ÖJAB-Haus Remise have been in operation on the Wolfganggasse life campus since 2022.

Accordingly, the ÖJAB BPI is also planning projects that are intended to counteract the shortage of skilled workers in nursing. This could, for example, be technical language training for nursing staff, for which the BPI already has experience and know-how. The required language skills are often a major hurdle for starting training or employment. In addition, during career orientation, young people could discover nursing professions on site and perhaps even learn from seniors in a buddy system. “We have many ideas for working together with our new neighbors. Our goal is to prepare you in terms of content and language for vocational training, for starting a career and for coping with everyday working life. We bring specialist expertise and many years of experience to the life campus“, summarizes the deputy director of the institute, Mario Jakic.

“AusbildungsFit” already worked intensively with the life campus facilities from its old location: 12 young people take turns spending two whole weeks in the nursing home, learning about nursing professions, giving time and care to old and sick people and helping, for example, with bed or wheelchair transport or senior care activities. Dozens of other young people accompany specialist companies in their work in student dormitories and nursing homes and thus learn about construction, technical, craftsmanship and gardening careers. “By moving to the life campus, we are now on site where the young people experience practical career orientation. They now meet even more intensively with old people in need of care on the one hand and students on the other. This is an interesting experience for all parties that promotes tolerance and self-reflection“, says “AusbildungsFit” director Sabrina Nill happily.

The ÖJAB – Austrian Young Workers Movement (https://www.oejab.at) is an independent NGO and one of the largest non-profit home support organizations in Austria. It operates 23 student residences and works in the areas of stationary and mobile care, education and integration work and development cooperation in Burkina Faso. There are 800 full-time employees and several hundred volunteers working at 44 locations.
