GLOBAL 2000 April Fool’s joke makes waves – energy transition is urgently needed in Tyrol

Countless reactions show how urgently a change of course at TIWAG is necessary

Innsbruck/Vienna (OTS) The environmental protection organization GLOBAL 2000 made an April Fool’s joke today that caused waves. In one Press release GLOBAL 2000 presents itself as Tiroler Wasserkraft AG (TIWAG) and announces a change of course with new CEO Viktoria Auer (climate and energy spokesperson at GLOBAL 2000). The central concern of the “new CEO” was a nature-friendly energy transition for Tyrol. The consistently positive reactions to the announcement show that these changes are actually urgently needed: TIWAG and the board were congratulated via Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and by email: “Great news for the energy transition” and “the realignment is the right one Away”.

Joke with a serious background – energy transition urgently needed

Unfortunately, TIWAG’s forward-looking announcement was just an April Fool’s joke. But the course changes announced therein would be urgently necessary. In recent months and years, the Tyrolean population has increasingly lost trust in the state-owned energy company. This is partly due to the fact that TIWAG has been sticking to the expansion of the Kaunertal power plant for over a decade, even though it has been explained that there are alternatives that would not destroy valuable nature. With the expansion of the Kaunertal power plant, important moors would be destroyed and up to 80 percent of the water from the Ötztaler Ache would be withdrawn – this also worries the population of the Ötztal, as it would threaten the local water supply. GLOBAL 2000 therefore calls for the urgently needed change of course by TIWAG: “Instead of finally expanding the energy transition in Tyrol in a nature-friendly way, TIWAG has cemented itself into place with its Kaunertal project. Enough time and resources have already been wasted on the nature-destroying mega-project. What Tyrol really needs is an energy transition that benefits the people of Tyrol and also protects the unique nature in Tyrol. We call on TIWAG to develop a plan on how the energy transition in Tyrol can be designed in a nature-friendly and fair manner,” demands Viktoria Auer, climate and energy spokesperson for GLOBAL 20000.

GLOBAL 2000 therefore calls on the entire population to set an example and sign the petition https://www.global2000.at/petition/kaunertal
