APG: Easter Bunny brings 260-ton egg | Austrian Power Grid AG, March 28, 2024

Even the Easter Bunny is involved in the energy transition: he places an egg in APG’s 14-meter-long nest just in time for the festival

Vienna (OTS) Hase with the license for security of supply: New APG logistics partner

To ensure the success of the secure energy transition, APG is currently expanding the Ybbsfeld substation in St. Martin-Karlsbach near Ybbs ad Donau (Lower Austria) by 42 million euros. “This also includes the delivery of a transformer – this job will be done by our new logistics partner during Holy Week 2024: the Easter Bunny,” says Christoph Schuh, company spokesman for the national power grid operator Austrian Power Grid (APG).

A transformer foundation can also be an Easter basket

With a 260-ton egg in his luggage, the hare hops straight into his 14-meter-long nest: the transformer foundation. The giant transformer, disguised as an Easter egg, is eleven meters long, four meters wide and seven meters high. The bunny has his hands full. Speaking of work: transformers have the task of bringing electricity from the country road to the motorway so that it can be transported over long distances. An extremely important function, this applies in particular to green electricity from sunlight and wind, which is often consumed elsewhere rather than generated.

Power for a secure energy transition

“Austria wants to decarbonize 100% of its electricity consumption by 2030. To ensure that this succeeds, APG will invest a total of nine billion euros in the conversion and expansion of the network infrastructure over the next 10 years,” informs Schuh. Substations play a key role in the transformation of the energy system: they are the on-ramps for renewable energy and integrate the electricity into APG’s Austria-wide transport network. In this way, the network operator ensures that the electricity always arrives exactly where it is needed: whether in this country or in Europe. And the heart of every substation? The transformer. Happy Easter!
