IMC Krems calls for universities of applied sciences to be included in the Psychotherapy Act

Krems (OTS) The IMC Krems supports the demand of the Austrian University of Applied Sciences Conference to enable application-oriented training in psychotherapy at universities of applied sciences.

Technical colleges deleted from the bill

The psychotherapy law in Austria is being comprehensively amended. The training, which is in high demand, could previously only be completed through private providers. From the 2026/27 academic year it was planned that universities and technical colleges in Austria would be able to offer the new two-year master’s degree. Despite the promise, the technical colleges as training institutions were removed from the current government proposal. This causes a lack of understanding – even at the IMC Krems.

The need for psychotherapeutic services is increasing. In order to ensure security of supply, offers must urgently be created in every federal state. People’s mental health should not depend on whether there is a university on site or not“, says IMC managing director Ulrike Prommer.

We support the criticism of the Austrian University of Applied Sciences Conference. The technical colleges with years of experience in application-oriented therapeutic sciences offer the perfect conditions for studying psychotherapy“, adds Martin Waiguny, academic director of IMC Krems.

Urgent appeal for resumption

The IMC Krems therefore urgently appeals to Federal Minister Rauch to reinstate the universities of applied sciences in the current legislative proposal in order to provide a comprehensive range of psychotherapists. This is an important step to ensure the training of highly qualified specialists and to meet the increasing demands in the psychotherapeutic field.
