Private initiative launches prominent call: For democracy and the rule of law – no government with the FPÖ

Well-known personalities from politics, science and culture support #DemocracyDefend – Demo March 23rd. Vienna

Vienna (OTS) 90 personalities from politics, science and art are calling on all other political parties to clearly rule out coalitions with the FPÖ and to be open to other government variants.

Die private Initiative was conducted by three social scientists and an educator (Rainer Bauböck, Jörg Flecker, Sieglinde Rosenberger and Heidi Schrodt) was started and published on the occasion of the “Defend Democracy!” demonstration on March 23rd in Vienna.

The non-partisan call is supported by numerous cultural workers and scientists as well as people who are close to the ÖVP, SPÖ, the Greens, Neos or the former Pilz list.

The signatories include, among others: Gabriele Burgstaller, Franz Fischler, Irmgard Griss, Michael Häupl, Rudolf Kaske, Christian Konrad, Ulrike Lunacek, Reinhold Mitterlehner, Heinrich Neisser, Alfred Noll, Bruno Rossmann, Heide Schmidt and Rudolf Scholten.

The FPÖ supports right-wing extremist ideologies and conspiracy narratives such as those of “remigration” and “population exchange”. Their attitudes are revealed in numerous anti-Semitic and racist outbursts. This party also wants to restructure the state based on Viktor Orbán’s model – all of which endangers democracy in Austria“, say the initiators.

The FPÖ is brutalizing the political language and culture and dividing Austrian society, endangering Austria’s security, and there are also many signs of a willingness to engage in corruption. The FPÖ also blocks European solidarity, including on issues of migration and climate protection, and represents Putin’s interests on foreign, security and energy issues“, the private initiative continues.

We know that there is no majority in Austrian society for the FPÖ’s political positions, nor does it have a chance of coming to power as soon as all other parties rule out a coalition with the FPÖ and are open to other government variants“, the initiators and the prominent signatories agree.

The initiators want to collect more signatures in the coming months and thus put pressure on the political parties to declare their coalition intentions.
