Easter survey 2024: Austrians spend 250 million euros on gifts.  Chocolate bunnies, eggs and toys are top sellers.

Per capita expenditure of 71 euros for Easter gifts and 56 euros for banquets. Styria, Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg are the most generous.

Vienna (OTS) The most important festival in the Christian calendar takes place at the end of March this year. For stationary retailers, Easter is the second most important festival of the year after Christmas. What the local Easter bunnies are doing March 31 give away gifts, where they buy their presents and in which federal states people are the most generous Trade Association together with the market research institute Mindtake Research raised.

89 euros for Easter gifts, 50 euros for banquets

“The chocolate bunny cannot be missing in five out of ten Easter baskets. Sweets remain the clear number one of the most popular Easter gifts in the country this year. Colored eggs follow with 40% and toys with 23%. With sales of around 250 million euros, Easter is the second most important festival for stationary retail after Christmas.”summarizes Rainer Willmanaging director of the independent and non-partisan trade association, summarized the results.

Domestic consumers will be average per capita this year 145 Euro spend for Easter, of that 89 euros for giftschocolate bunnies and decorations as well 50 euros for the banquet. Overall, this is a good 10 percent less than the previous year and shows that domestic customers are still in savings mode.

One in five people don’t give anything away at Easter

“In 2023, Easter sales were a good 10% higher at 280 million euros. According to our latest consumer barometer, two thirds of Austrians still have to restrict themselves financially. One in five people don’t give anything away at Easter – but of course there are often religious reasons for this” , so Will.

Federal state comparison: Western and southern federal states top

The residents of the western federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg are the most generous at Easter, on a par with the southern federal states of Styria and Carinthia. In both regions, the average per capita expenditure is 164 euros. Upper Austria and Salzburg (149 euros) as well as Lower Austria and Burgenland (137 euros) are in the middle field, with the federal capital Vienna once again at the bottom with only 116 euros per capita.

68% consciously buy regionally at Easter

Every second Austrian (50%) buys for Easter Supermarket or at Discounter a. One in three (33%) shops for Easter in the shopping center and one in four (25%) shops in shopping streets. Slightly fewer buy supplies online from foreign (21%) or domestic (10%) webshops. Markets (18%) and special Easter markets (15%) are also popular.

How important it is for Austrians to buy fresh food Good Friday is evident from the fact that it is the second busiest day of the year for the food retail sector in terms of sales. But non-food retailers also serve customers on Good Friday to get decorations and gifts for their loved ones.

What is crucial is that the added value remains largely in Austria and therefore benefits our producers and traders. In other words, those who employ over 700,000 people in this country, pay taxes and thus help finance the social and health system.
