Top opportunities for girls in technology and crafts – open apprenticeships for mechanical engineering technology, track construction technology, cleaning technology
Vienna (OTS) – The Wiener Stadtwerke is still looking for the best minds and most skilled hands in nine of 19 apprenticeships for Wiener Linien, Wiener Energie, Wiener Netze and Co. In the autumn, a total of 225 new apprentices will start, with more trainees than ever before. This year there are again top opportunities for girls with an affinity for technology, who are particularly in demand and supported by the company. A total of 600 apprentices are being trained. The Wiener Stadtwerke Group currently offers the most open apprenticeships in track construction technology, mechanical engineering technology and cleaning technology. In all 19 apprenticeships it is possible to combine the apprenticeship with the Matura. In addition to the group-wide IT apprenticeship that started in autumn 2023, in which the apprentices rotate in different group companies during their training, the commercial apprenticeship has also been offered group-wide since December 2023. As in previous years, apprentice salaries were increased again for 2024.
Getting more women interested in technology: The clear goal is 50 percent
In Austria, women are still drastically underrepresented in technical professions – their proportion is around 15 percent. “We are fighting to inspire more young women to pursue a career in technology – with success,” says General Director Peter Weinelt. While the proportion of female apprentices in craft and technical professions at Wiener Stadtwerke was 7 percent in 2017, it is currently at 30 percent. “But we continue to pursue a clear goal: We want to increase the proportion of women in our teaching professions to 50 percent,” says Weinelt.
Wiener Stadtwerke continues to take innovative approaches to apprentice marketing, which has won several awards in recent years: the online campaign, which has been running since the beginning of February, focuses on Instagram, TikTok, Twitch and YouTube in order to reach the target group.
