Independent trade union faction sees massive failures by the government in protecting against violence.
Vienna (OTS) – „The loud silence from the federal government and the responsible minister Raab regarding the current femicides is incomprehensible
Marion Polaschek, chairwoman of the Independent Trade Union Group in the ÖGB, is shocked and says: “We trade unionists have been calling for serious discussion of the issue of harassment and violence for years because we know from our work with and for people how urgent it is problem is. When will this finally reach the top of political responsibility?”
„The attitude that so much is already being done in Austria and that there is no acute need for new programs is simply no longer tenable.”
she continues.
Since 2019, Convention 190 on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which Austria also helped develop, could also have been ratified in Austria. Although this agreement starts at the workplace, it also extends far into the problems of society as a whole.
“What time have we lost! We could already have nationwide plans and measures against violence and its consequences, and prevention programs might already be effective
“, Marion Polaschek complains and concludes: “Show us women that you have an effective plan for how we as a society can overcome this ever-increasing violence
! Finally take action!”
