Strengthen pharmaceutical production in Austria | PHARMIG, February 22, 2024

Austrian Health Report shows great public support for domestic drug production. Appeal to politicians for sustainable framework conditions.

This response and this commitment to domestic pharmaceutical production is very gratifying. I also see this as a signal to politicians to improve the framework conditions for domestic drug production. Because it is important to maintain and, ideally, expand what is already happening in this area in Austria. This benefits the local economy and also security of supply, which is important to all of us

Mag. Alexander Herzog, Secretary General of PHARMIG

Vienna (OTS) According to the one published today Austrian Health Report 81 percent of the population consider the production of medicines in their own country to be (very) important. “This response and this commitment to domestic pharmaceutical production is very gratifying. I also see this as a signal to politicians to improve the framework conditions for domestic drug production. Because it is important to maintain and, ideally, expand what is already happening in this area in Austria. This benefits the local economy and also security of supply, which is important to all of us“, says Alexander Herzog, Secretary General of PHARMIG.

The health report, which was commissioned by the PHARMIG member company Sandoz, shows, in addition to the high level of popularity for domestic drug production, that the population would be willing to accept higher drug prices for these products. “That is entirely understandable, because there is now obviously a broad understanding that a low-price policy endangers supplies,” says Herzog. After all, an average of 20 medicines fall out of the reimbursement code every month because economic marketing is no longer possible.

“Fair prices and long-term planning have a stabilizing effect. “This is the only way companies can maintain or expand their locations and have the opportunity to contribute to the diversity of medicines and thus to high-quality supply in Austria and to an internationally sought-after production location,” says Herzog.
