Cornelio Sommaruga headed the International Committee of the Red Cross from 1987 to 1999 – awarded the International Josef Krainer Prize in Austria
Vienna (OTS) – Former President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Cornelio Sommaruga has died at the age of 91. The international Red Cross movement mourns the loss of a man who was known for his skill and eloquence.
Gerald Creator, President of the Austrian Red Cross: “I am deeply shocked by the news that reached us from Geneva today. Cornelio Sommaruga’s influence extended beyond the borders of his home country; he also enjoyed great respect in Austria. While he was still at the ICRC, in 1996, he was awarded the International Josef Krainer Prize in Styria. Today we remember his magnificent achievements and his commitment to the Red Cross. Our thoughts are also with his family, to whom we send our sincere condolences!”
Assistance in armed conflicts
Sommaruga headed the ICRC from 1987 to 1999. The ICRC helps people affected by armed conflict. As an independent, neutral organization, its mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflicts and other violent situations. The ICRC is also committed to ensuring compliance with international humanitarian law and its implementation into national law.
“Cornelio Sommaruga’s tireless commitment to international humanitarian law and humanity in the midst of armed conflicts deserve the highest recognition – today more than ever in view of the crises that we are currently observing with horror,” emphasizes Creator.
