SPÖ referee: Von der Leyen falls to the right with the EVP

Von der Leyen is running for a second term as EU Commission President

Vienna (OTS/SK) Today, EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen announced at a meeting of the CDU party leadership in Berlin that she would run for another term in office. Andreas Schieder, SPÖ-EU delegation leader, takes stock: “Unfortunately, the European People’s Party under Manfred Weber has moved further and further to the right in the last two years. Pacts were made with right-wing parties and groundbreaking laws in the climate and social areas were thwarted and a de facto blockade policy was pursued. Practices such as stopping laws that have already been negotiated at the last minute have unfortunately become common practice. Von der Leyen has also been unable to resist the pressure in recent months and has backed down on pesticides and the like. As a candidate for the EPP party family, she gives precisely this policy a face and finally falls to the right together with her party.” ****

For the election campaign and a possible second term in office, Schieder demands: “We need a Commission President who stands up for a strong social Europe and will help us rebuild the firewall against right-wing populism, more than ever. Only together can we stop the shift to the right in Europe and the President of the EU Commission plays an important role in this.” (Conclusion) lp
