“Consciously healthy” about the increasing number of whooping cough cases in Austria

On February 17th at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2

Vienna (OTS) Dr. Christine Reiler will present the following articles in the ORF health magazine “Bewusst Gesundheit” on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. on ORF 2:

Thrombectomy – effective method for stroke

More than 50 people suffer a stroke every day in Austria and the number is increasing, on the one hand because the population is getting older, but also because the unhealthy lifestyle of many people increases the risk of stroke. The good news: In recent years, therapies have been developed that significantly reduce the long-term consequences of a stroke. A crucial method is thrombectomy, the mechanical removal of a blood clot from the brain. If this is done in a timely manner, there is a good chance that even severe strokes will not cause massive damage. Design: Christian Kugler

whooping cough

The number of whooping cough cases in Austria is currently increasing sharply and poses a great danger, especially for infants. Since whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is one of the most common respiratory infections worldwide and is highly contagious, an illness is considered to be reportable in Austria. The best prevention is vaccination, which must be refreshed regularly even in adulthood, says Univ.-Prof. Dr. Florian Thalhammer, President of the Austrian Society for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine.

Quinoa – superfood with instructions for use

Quinoa has been used as a staple food in South America for around 6,000 years and is also appearing more and more often in our part of the world. The nut plant is often confused with grains and marketed as a superfood because it contains a lot of protein, vitamins and minerals. However, the correct handling of the pseudo-grain needs to be learned. If quinoa is not washed thoroughly enough before cooking, gastrointestinal problems can result. Design: Christian Kugler

“Consciously healthy” tip: bladder weakness

Bladder weakness is widespread: the Austrian Continence Society estimates that one in four women and one in ten men will be affected by this problem over the course of their lives. The most common is so-called stress incontinence, i.e. the uncontrolled loss of urine when coughing or exerting yourself. In women, the cause can be menopause or the birth of a child; in men it is usually prostate problems. Univ.-Prof. provides information about common therapies. Dr. Siegfried Meryn.

Fit in Pension

From the age of 30 onwards, your muscles will steadily lose weight if you don’t train regularly. Muscles are important not only for being able to carry out movements without pain, but also for preventing illness. It is therefore important to continue to move as you transition into retirement or to use the time you have gained for long walks or other activities. It is usually enough to walk shorter distances or take the stairs instead of the elevator to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Design: Steffi Zupan
