Sabine Derflinger’s award-winning portrait of a visionary – on February 18th at 11:05 p.m. on ORF 2
Vienna (OTS) – Many women find themselves in her, in their struggles, their victories and their failures: The “dokFilm” commemorates Johanna Dohnal’s 85th birthday on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 11:05 p.m. on ORF 2 with Sabine Derflinger’s portrait “ The Dohnal” to an icon of the Austrian women’s movement. Born in Vienna, she was the first women’s minister in the Republic of Austria in 1990 and at the same time a hero and visionary in the fight for women’s rights. Derflinger shows that the SPÖ politician, who died in 2010, has been unjustly forgotten, with her multi-award-winning cinema production from 2020, which was co-financed by ORF as part of the film/television agreement, and thus sets the tone for this important female figure in Austrian history Identification figure for future generations, a monument.

The Viennese Johanna Dohnal was one of the first feminists in a European government. This was still revolutionary in the 1990s. In a male-dominated politics, the self-confessed lesbian was uncomfortable for many; she was a hindrance. Brigitte Ederer, Ferdinand Lacina and Emmy Werner remember their work together in anecdotes, Alice Schwarzer muses: “They had a combative women’s rights activist in the government – that was fun.” ÖVP Minister Maria Rauch-Kallat reveals how she did often together – in secret agreements with Dohnal – were able to prevent a deterioration for women in government politics.
In the film, Dohnal’s partner Annemarie Aufreiter tells us for the first time about the person behind the committed women’s rights activist and pioneer for future generations. During a car ride with Dohnal’s former chauffeur, granddaughter Johanna-Helen Dohnal remembers the time when her grandmother gave her a ride in her company car.
