Construction site opening for the “ÖJAB nursing home Salzburg” with 148 places | ÖJAB

In the Salzburg district of Aigen, the non-profit ÖJAB is building the largest private nursing home in the state in terms of space.

Salzburg (OTS) The number of very old people and people in need of care is growing. By 2026, the state of Salzburg will need inpatient care places for 600 additional people, predicts the “Austrian Nursing Care Report 2022” from the Ministry of Health (p. 203, table 120).

In order to take this development into account, the non-profit and independent NGO ÖJAB – Austrian Young Workers’ Movement is expanding and modernizing its senior housing complex at Aigner Straße 19 in the city of Salzburg, which was built in 1991. It currently offers 118 residential and care places (www.oejab.at/aigen).

In a first step, a modern new building will be built on the directly adjacent site. The existing building will then be completely renovated in several stages, thoroughly modernized and expanded by one floor. The new “ÖJAB care home Salzburg – Feel good in the park” with 148 care places (www.oejab.at/pflege-salzburg). During the entire construction period, almost all seniors will be able to remain in their homes, and all nursing jobs will be retained.

House communities with single rooms are planned, as are residential structures for couples. As before, the new house will be open to everyone, regardless of their financial situation and level of care.

The ÖJAB nursing home in Salzburg will be the most modern and attractive nursing home in the state of Salzburg. At the same time, it will also be a lively social space that is open to the outside world and will provide essential infrastructure for an entire district“, announces ÖJAB managing director Monika Schüssler.

Living and care in a park setting

The residential and care buildings will be grouped in a park around a green village square, in close proximity to protected grassland. “The five-story, compact new building will carefully fit into the park landscape. The renovation and restructuring of the existing parts of the building creates new and contemporary spatial qualities“, explains architect Ludwig Kofler from the Salzburg architectural firm kofler architects. The existing building will be expanded using lightweight timber construction.

“We designed the sealed area for the new building to be as small as possible,” emphasizes architect Kofler. In order to increase the quality of life outdoors, the required car parking spaces will be arranged underground as far as possible. For the new building, the city of Salzburg swapped building land and grassland so that the total area of protected grassland remained the same.

The general contractor is Baustellenzone GmbH from Mondsee. The construction company employed is Johann Oberrater Bauunternehmungs GmbH from Maishofen in the Zell am See district. “Almost all companies involved come from the region. The regional added value of the construction project is important to us“, emphasizes ÖJAB managing director Monika Schüssler.

The Salzburg city and state politicians, their responsible specialist departments and the design advisory board of the city of Salzburg support and accompany the “ÖJAB nursing home Salzburg” project and are in close contact with the ÖJAB.

According to the current planning status, the construction costs will be around EUR 30 million. ÖJAB has applied to the state of Salzburg for housing subsidies.

ÖJAB trains nursing staff itself

Will there be enough nursing staff for the ÖJAB nursing home in Salzburg? Managing director Monika Schüssler answers: “We have taken three precautions: Firstly, we train ourselves in the ÖJAB nursing school. Secondly, we take in nursing staff from EU countries and from Colombia, India and the Philippines and give them specialist German lessons in our own vocational education institute as well as accommodation in our student halls. Thirdly, as a social NGO, we pay attention to particularly pleasant working conditions and a humane working atmosphere and invest a lot in this. That’s why we are already confronted with fewer staff shortages than other providers. ÖJAB was recognized by kununu as one of Austria’s five most family-friendly companies in the social sector. In the future, the ÖJAB nursing home in Salzburg will now also offer the most attractive nursing jobs in Salzburg in terms of construction.

The ÖJAB – Austrian Young Workers Movement (www.oejab.at) is an independent NGO and one of the largest non-profit home support organizations in Austria. It operates 23 student residences and works in the areas of stationary and mobile care, vocational education and integration work and development cooperation. There are 800 full-time employees and several hundred volunteers working at 44 locations. ÖJAB was founded in 1946 during the reconstruction of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.
