FPÖ – Reifenberger: “The political ‘cancel culture’ does not stop at deserving war heroes!” | Freedom Parliamentary Club

Now the Brumowski air base is also being renamed Langenlebarn

Vienna (OTS) After the renaming of the Windisch barracks in Klagenfurt, another renaming of a barracks by the ÖVP Defense Minister Tanner is now causing a stir. This time the Brumowski Air Base in Langenlebarn has fallen into the clutches of the ÖVP-led “Cancel Culture” and is to be renamed. Once again, the memory of a battle-hardened Austrian soldier is being trampled on – the Military Historical Monuments Commission supports the project. “Replacing a battle-hardened war hero with a deserving representative of the armed forces of the Second Republic is unnecessary and tarnishes the reputation of an entire war generation,” remarked the liberal defense spokesman NAbg. Volker Reifenberger.

“Against the background of an open conflict on the edge of Europe, there still seem to be political circles that want to deny the Federal Army any basic military characteristics. “So it is soldiers who, in times of military national defense, put themselves at the service of their homeland, risking their physical integrity and their own lives, and make an above-average contribution to homeland defense,” said Reifenberger.

The maintenance of tradition and the honoring of deserving personalities in Austrian history lead to the dedication of decommissioned years and military properties. Backed by the scientific expertise of the Military History Museum, names are dedicated to names at the Army NCO Academy, the Theresian Military Academy and also military properties of the Federal Army. “The Federal Army’s website itself reveals that Godwin von Brumowski had proven himself several times in the First World War not only as a courageous fighter pilot, but also as a successful troop leader. With 35 confirmed (and eight unconfirmed) aerial victories, he was the most successful fighter pilot of the Austro-Hungarian aviation troops in the First World War. The numerous awards presented by the Republic of Austria and the tragic accidental death underline the outstanding character and role model of the officer and World War veteran. Against the background of the often touted spiritual national defense, which should make Austrian society more resilient to crises, the Tanner Ministry’s efforts appear incomprehensible.”

For this reason, the Freedom Party advocates a serious spiritual national defense within the framework of comprehensive national defense and advocates retaining the barracks name Brumowski. “From a freedom perspective, historical figures who have made above-average contributions to national defense and the development of the armed forces must under no circumstances become victims of left-wing ‘cancel culture’,” emphasized the liberal defense spokesman Reifenberger, who is also a militia soldier himself.
