A year ago, Aleppo in northern Syria was shaken by a severe earthquake. The Salesians of Don Bosco helped from the very beginning and continue their support.
Aleppo (OTS) – Christina Nihad Luxa, a 32-year-old mother of two, remembers the horrors of that night. “My daughter Jessica was born on January 17, 2023, exactly 17 days before the devastating earthquake. The shock and fear we experienced during the quake are difficult to put into words
“, she reports. “The fears stay with me to this day, especially when it rains because the noise always reminds me of the earthquake.
“
Immediately after the devastating earthquake, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Aleppo offered protection and assistance to the earthquake victims. They provided people with food, medical and psychological care, warm clothing and a place to sleep. “Many people were literally left with nothing. The Salesians are on site and helping
“, explains Brother Günter Mayer SDB, Managing Director of Don Bosco Mission Austria.
Traumatized and without hope
Father Pier Jabloyan SDB from Aleppo reports on the ongoing challenges: “Many children and young people are traumatized; they have difficulty concentrating and sleep problems. In our Don Bosco centers we offer psychological help.
This support is now being expanded with the help of psychologists trained in trauma management.
The Salesians of Don Bosco have been in Syria since 1948. Even during the war they did not leave the country. The Don Bosco Houses are located in Aleppo, Damascus and Kafroun. The focus is on helping children and young people.
So that the lives of young people around the world are successful
Don Bosco Mission Austria is part of the Catholic order of the Salesians of Don Bosco in Austria.
