Europe’s farmers and climate protection
This week the EU Parliament in Strasbourg addressed the issues of climate and the environment. The plenary days were overshadowed by Europe-wide farmers’ protests, some of which escalated in Brussels. Farmers are confronted with ever higher production costs and ever stricter requirements and wanted to make their voices heard by blocking roads. The EU Commission must have heard you – a controversial pesticide agreement has now been overturned. But how does this affect the climate goals? Marcus Blecha reports.

When do we vote?
Since Chancellor Karl Nehammer presented his Austrian plan in Wels two weeks ago, there has been speculation about early National Council elections. Parts of the ÖVP seem to be aiming for a merger with the EU elections on June 9th. But how does that work logistically? EU citizens are also allowed to vote in the EU elections. And how long is the deadline? It’s getting tight, says Robert Stein, the former head of the electoral affairs department at the Interior Ministry for decades. Susanne Däubel also interviewed members of parliament and the political scientist Peter Filzmaier.
Werner Zögernitz turns 80
They still exist, the experts who have put and continue to serve Parliament their entire professional lives. One of them is Werner Zögernitz. He was the ÖVP club director for many years and is the author of the commentary on the National Council’s rules of procedure, i.e. the rules of the game in the House. And he is still active. There was a ceremony in Parliament to mark his 80th birthday. Former companions and “Hohes Haus” editor Claus Bruckmann were there.
