Vienna (OTS) – Numerous animals suffer from respiratory diseases, joint pain or need expensive operations in order to be able to live relatively pain-free. The reason: torture breeding. This means that the animals are bred to have certain body shapes or appearances, which then result in illness, pain and suffering. “It’s actually been banned for a long time. So far there have been loopholes and no clear guidelines for the authorities. “We are now setting a new standard in Austria that is exemplary for the whole of Europe and are prioritizing the health and well-being of animals, including in breeding,” said Faika El-Nagashi, animal protection spokeswoman for the Greens, about the pet package (amendment to the Animal Welfare Act). , which will be reviewed next week.
In the future, a scientific commission to avoid torture breeding will be set up. This will define quality breeding characteristics and provide guidelines for breeding.
“With the Qualification Breeding Commission there will be clear guidelines in terms of pet protection. Breeding programs must be examined by experts in the future; breeds particularly affected by torture breeding symptoms can also be excluded from breeding entirely. “We are setting new, groundbreaking standards in pet protection for the whole of Europe,” explains El-Nagashi.
In addition to the ban on cruel breeding, other important areas will be newly regulated: For protection dog training in the private sector, there will in future be character tests for the animals as well as strict requirements for owners and trainers. This makes it much more difficult for their owners to “arm” dogs.
In general, certificates of expertise are required for animal owners of exotic animals such as amphibians, reptiles and parrots. For the first time, this expertise also includes a practical component for keeping dogs.
“Anyone who owns an animal has a responsibility. With the mandatory proof of expertise for keeping dogs and exotic animals, we are setting a new animal welfare standard in Austria. This prevents impulse purchases and false ideas about living with an animal. This also means: fewer animals that end up in animal shelters or are abandoned. By expanding the certificate of expertise, we are focusing on the needs and requirements of animals,” emphasizes El-Nagashi.
