Women’s protection in the spotlight: 3 outstanding initiatives honored

COMÚN Foundation and an.schläge magazine award “DIY Women’s Day Linz”, “Pro Choice Vorarlberg” and “Neighbours in Vienna” with 2,000 euros and portraits, to be continued

We were very happy that there were so many submissions for our call! This confirms how important it is to make visible the great commitment of the many women who work for women and against violence all year round. The three initiatives selected by the jury are the ideal image that has come true of a committed civil society that does not look away but takes action. We will give out this award and the prize money to support the activists every year in the future.”

Vienna (OTS) In December 2023, the non-profit federal foundation COMÚN, together with the magazine an.schläge, called for the first time to nominate outstanding activities to protect women. As part of the global campaign “16 Days against Violence against Women”, submissions were collected from all over Austria and then selected by a jury consisting of Andrea Czak (FEMA Association), Brigitte Theißl (an.schläge) and Magdalena Baran-Szoltys (COMÚN). rated. From numerous submissions, three initiatives were ultimately selected that did particularly outstanding work.

The certificates and prize money were recently personally handed over in Vienna by COMÚN office manager Rebecca Bachinger. First place went to “DIY Women’s Day Linz”, a group of committed people who organize demos, get-togethers and more; they were awarded 1,000 euros. The “Pro Choice Vorarlberg” initiative, which advocates for safe abortion, came in second place, and the “Neighbors in Vienna” association, which looks after isolated migrant families in Vienna, came in third place. They are each supported with 500 euros.

Awarded initiatives are “ideal images of committed civil society come true”

Brigitte Theißl, senior editor: “Austria has a massive problem with violence against women in close relationships. And protection against violence does not just start with protecting victims and working with perpetrators: feminist initiatives that fight for gender equality make an important contribution to preventing violence.
