EU Commissioner and Federal Minister as a guest at Event in Innsbruck

Innsbruck/Vienna (ots) –

A strong sign of climate-friendly mobility made EU transport and tourism commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Minister of Mobility Peter Hanke. As part of the European Mobility Week (EMW), they made it clear that sustainable mobility is a central task for the entire European Union and Austria – affordable, inclusive and accessible to everyone.

Together with schoolchildren, the two politicians and the managing director of the Tyrol Transport Association took part in a Move workshop, an innovative format that prepares children and young people for independent use of public transport. The workshop, which the pupils: Inside the Innsbruck Elementary School visited on the occasion of the EMW, was made possible by VVT (Tirol Transport Association), IVB (IVB – Innsbruck Verkehrsbetriebe) and ÖBB and carried out by the Tyrol climate alliance.

In his statement, EU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasized the European dimension: “The European week of mobility shows how closely European cooperation and regional initiatives interact. Everywhere in Europe, cities, municipalities and educational institutions set impulses for climate-friendly mobility-from innovative school projects to testing new traffic solutions. This common commitment makes it clear: Sustainable mobility is not a promise of the future, but already a reality, supported by the strength of our European community. ”

This year the EMW is under the motto “Mobility for everyone” – and focuses on the social dimension: How can transport systems be designed in such a way that they are accessible, safe and affordable for all people – regardless of age, origin, income or place of residence?

Federal Minister Peter Hanke then emphasized the connection between climate protection and social justice: “If we come together climate protection and social justice, mobility arises that is attractive to all people. During the European mobility week, municipalities in Austria and throughout the EU set a strong signal in this direction.

The European Mobility Week will take place in Austria in 2025 for the 24th time. Over 2,500 cities and municipalities in more than 40 countries, including over 500 in Austria, take part with actions that make sustainable mobility visible and show ways into a climate -friendly future.
