With the haunting words “Be a person!” Marcel Reif appealed on January 31, 2024 as part of a commemorative lesson for the victims of National Socialism in the German Bundestag of sympathy, attitude and responsibility, and also Margot Friedländer, who died in May 2025, brought this reminder with her appeal “Be people!” in the social discussion. The history of Marcel Reif, against the background of his family history, is now making the History Channel the motto of his History Award, which Hearst Networks Germany’s broadcaster advertises for the 14th time. Young people are invited to show in their own film articles what humanity, humanity and cohesion means for them – in everyday life, in the community and in view of the future.
Marcel Reif and the influencer Melina Hoischen (“Miss History”) took over the patronage of the History Award 2026. “That the message ‘is a person!’ Many people have already inspired me a lot. Melina Hoischen says: “It is very important to me that history is not forgotten, but can learn our society from it in order to become a better one in the here and now.”
Kathrin Palesch, Managing Director Hearst Networks Germany: “‘Be a person!’ is more than one sentence – it is an invitation to show attitude and transports a message that could not be more current.

The History Award has been advertised under a changing motto since 2005. Pupils of all ages and types of school are invited to deal with the given topic in different ways. Supervisory teachers of all conceivable departments can support students in choosing a topic and fit them into their curriculum. Participation does not have to take place in the class association. What is important is a recognizable innovative, creative and/or analytical approach to an aspect related to the award topic. The chosen topic should then be implemented in film. It doesn’t matter whether you are filmed with a high -quality camera or simply the smartphone. The central goal of the History Award is the recognition of active and creative examination of a historical and social topic in the form of a video contribution.
