Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner emphasizes sustainability in the armed forces

Vienna (OTS) The Armed Forces continues to invest in its sustainability and self-sufficiency. In the future, photovoltaic systems for sustainable energy production will be installed on military properties in all new construction projects and renovations of buildings. This was most recently built in the Van Swieten barracks and at the Allentsteig military training area.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “A key goal of the federal government is the fight against climate change. The Federal Army also makes its contribution in the interests of ecological national defense. One of our many contributions to a sustainable federal army is the construction of photovoltaic systems in order to take a further step towards self-sufficient barracks and a self-sufficient federal army. In doing so, we are contributing to the fight against climate change and at the same time creating a modern armed forces and an attractive employer.”

In the future, photovoltaic systems will be installed in all new buildings and general renovation projects of the Armed Forces. So far, construction has only been carried out on specific projects. Most recently, photovoltaic systems were put into operation as part of the construction of the new position building in the Van Swieten barracks in Vienna and during the general renovation of the crew quarters at the Allentsteig military training area. Future projects in which photovoltaic systems will be built include the construction of the large barracks in Villach and two new buildings at the Brumowski air base in Langenlebarn and at the Fiala-Fernbrugg air base in Aigen am Ennstal.

The Federal Army practices environmental protection comprehensively. In addition to the construction of photovoltaic systems, biodiversity on military training areas is also secured. The Allentsteig military training area is part of the “Natura 2000 protected area network”. Other measures include the “Klimateller” project, which ensures more regional and seasonal food in barracks, sustainable mobility through a fleet of electric vehicles and sustainable procurement. Training courses provide information and awareness about the topics of environmental protection, sustainability, ecology and waste separation.
