And when the ZDF indicates “passages with discriminatory language and attitude” at the beginning of the neo-series “Chabos”, which “for reasons of authenticity”, “as they took place at the time”, this is also absolutely appropriate.

At that time there were still manners that not only called compliance officers today. With some chaos theoretical energy, such a mindset led straight into the disaster 19 years ago. And that’s how it works.

Because the 16-year-old PD (Jonathan Kriener) and his best (only) friends Peppi (Nico Marischka) and Alba (Arsseni Bultmann) are not coming to the Duisburg disco, ask the computer nerd (Loran Alhasan) of the same age from this new thing called the Internet. Where this leads, the now aged Peppi (Johannes Kienast) shows right at the beginning of the first of eight episodes. His life as an employee of a start-up for fridge-to-fridge has failed anyway. When the mid -thirties then also learns that nobody invited him to the class reunion, he drives home to Duisburg on the cause of the causes – and meets the spirits of his past. Peppi wonders what else when he mentally travels to the summer fairy tale year. “Where can you make as an adult and live out sadism and still earn money? If Peppi constantly explains to us through the fourth wall directly into the camera how the past and the present are wired together, it is not only a narrative trip to the nineties when telephones still had man -high cells instead of touchscreens and the download of digital films lasted three hours. With “Chabos” he also takes us eight times 30 minutes into the pre -brine of an equality -free world. Women occur in this.

Anke Engelke, for example, plays Peppis unhappily married mother with a similarly massive presence like Arina Prass his first friend Mascha and Paula Kober the adult Pinar. In general, however, female figures are always in the shadow of male figures. These are the ones that give the plot structure. Almost every joke of this crazy tail parade revolves around their quirks and mistakes of long -past, ghostly close days.

It seems like a self-ironic admission that Peppi uses his brother-in-law to use the Bechdel test to check the independence of female film characters on previous »Chabos« scenes and then swing the camera to seven male crew members. Perhaps it is just honest to tell a tragic comedy about the last twitching of the patriarchy from his point of view.

This does not yet make “Chabos” a feminist series. But she manages to tell the struggle for equality 20 years ago despite a slight quality drop in the second half. But substantial.
