In May, the federal government announced the “ban” the full column floor, but in truth it is a semantic trick. The “unstructured” full column floor was banned with a transition period until 2038, the “structured” full column floor will be the new legal minimum standard for all pig farms from 2038. The number of columns is reduced on a third of the floor and a pig weighing up to 110 kg gets 0.8 instead of 0.7 m² space for its existence. The bottom line is that practically nothing changes for the pigs. The cruelty to animals on full column floor is and remains legally permitted in Austria.
The VGT will tour Austria for the next few weeks in order to point out the continued permitted posture of pigs on full columns and to protest it. The first stop is in Bregenz.
