Klagenfurt am Wörthersee houses a special gem with the internationally significant European protection area Lendspitz-Maiernigg. It is not a coincidence that nature and leisure use can survive here, but the result of predictive work, strong partnerships and real conviction. Stadtwerke Klagenfurt show that a modern supply company also takes responsibility for the environment and quality of life.
The Klagenfurter Ostbucht is a place full of opposites – and that is exactly the strength. Where the European Protection area and the beach baths of the Stadtwerke Klagenfurt (STW) meet directly, a sensitive but opportunity-rich interface between nature and leisure use is created. Together with the ECO Institute for Ecology and in coordination with the Climate and Environmental Protection of the Magistrate State Capital, Klagenfurt, the STW are involved in maintaining and further developing this unique interaction.
Use responsibly – protect consciously
The Klagenfurt lido is more than a place for swimming and sunbathing: with 40,000 m² of green space, 430 meters of the bank line and the characteristic 190 bathrooms, it is a piece of home, a place of encounter and joie de vivre – the “extended living room of the Klagenfurter”.
Tourism and nature conservation are not mutually exclusive if they are coordinated. This is exactly where the sustainable commitment of STW and ECO comes in in the Klagenfurter Ostbucht. The aim of the municipal utility is to create a balance between relaxation for people and the protection of sensitive habitats for animals and plants. This means that the interests of the approximately 600,000 bathers annually in the beach baths in Klagenfurt, Loretto and Maiernigg to reconcile with the requirements of the neighboring European Protection Area.
“The reed belt in the east bay of Lake Wörthersee is the largest and overall one of the last on Lake Wörthersee. With a permanent trouble- especially in the breeding season- sensitive water birds have to give up their breeding and habitat. We therefore want to preserve this natural area as the last retreat for protected species,” explains Susanne Glatz-Jorde from the Eco Institute for Ecology.
Protects by knowledge – nature experience with mindfulness
Consciousness formation is a key to maintain nature and to sensitize people to their importance. That is why the StW and ECO relies on information, education and creative approaches:
-
Eco employees provide information about respectful behavior on the water in the lido (e.g. for great),
-
Children experience the variety of nature playfully with a puzzle rally in the lido
-
Rait protection fences in the European protection area are renewed and
-
Fought in a targeted manner.
The reed protection plays a central role in the ecosystem of Lake Wörthersee. The dwarf dommel, a rare and shy bird species and mascots of the municipal utility, symbolically stands for the invisible treasures. Because: In the east bay is the largest coherent reed belt of Lake Wörthersee- a brood and retreat place for many water birds. Disorders-for example through loud activities or rapprochement with stand-up paddles-endanger these sensitive habitats.
Campaign “Fair to nature – fair to the lake”
Clear rules help to anchor the consideration of nature in people’s minds. For a successful coexistence between people and nature, a few principles are already helping, e.g. B.:
-
Sign signs and bojets mark protective area borders. Do not exceed them.
-
No entering or driving on the reed zones and the sensitive sadnitz area.
-
Keep the reed surfaces and water lily fields with SUPs and boats only by a large distance.
-
Loud music and noise disturb animals and should therefore be avoided.
-
No garbage throwing away in nature.
