Parliament unanimously demands release of all political prisoners in Georgia

In view of the recent developments in Georgia, Neos foreign policy spokesman Veit Dengler is alerted: “Georgia was on the right path towards the European Union. But in recent years, the government party ‘Georgian Dream’ has hollowed out of democratic institutions, suppress the opposition and civil society and even locked up political opponents.”

With the proposal proposal in the National Council for the release of all political prisoners, NEOS, which was assumed unanimously yesterday, NEOS indicates the dramatic situation in the country. Dengler emphasizes: “We have to raise our voice if governments – like those in Tbilisi – violate European basic values. It is unacceptable that peaceful protests react by violence to say goodbye to the Russian role model and that opposition work is systematically criminalized.”

In particular, the Georgian government’s decision to suspend the accession negotiations with the European Union by the end of 2028 is a dangerous step backwards. Dengler makes it clear: “If you want to go to Europe, you have to be measured by the European criteria – this includes free elections, separation of powers, media freedom and the protection of civil society. These principles are not negotiable.”
