Vienna (OTS) The joint project of the KFV and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria identifies security risks in products in online retail using AI technology. The technology will be used in the future as a component to increase consumer safety and was awarded the prestigious “EU Product Safety Award” by the European Commission in Brussels.

The EU Product Safety Award promotes innovative initiatives that go one step further for consumers and increase the level of protection across Europe. This was achieved in a joint project between the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria and the KFV, which is dedicated to research into identifying product safety problems based on online reviews from consumers.

Increasing the safety of the population is the KFV’s most important concern. Our project is a pioneer in the area of product safety. We are very proud to have been recognized with such an important award. It shows that our project can make a significant contribution to targeted and effective improvement of product defects in the future,“ says Dr. Johanna Trauner-Karner, Head of Sports and Leisure Safety at KFV.

New AI technologies have been used to identify these security risks. AI helped analyze texts and identify patterns in large amounts of data. Machine learning was also used to identify and group specific topics in text data. “The use of advanced language processing and web crawling technologies has enabled us to achieve new levels of accuracy and efficiency in customer review analysis,” says Prof. Dr. Andreas Stöckl from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.

Using the example of checking customer reviews of chainsaws, it was shown how these technologies identified weak points of certain products. From a large number of reviews on a large online shopping portal, various main problems were identified. Thanks to detailed analysis of this large amount of data, specific safety deficiencies were identified and addressed, helping to improve product quality and safety.

Organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (JUST), the aim of this award is to reward innovative initiatives that promote greater product safety and ensure better consumer protection for younger generations.
