The Austrian army has made significant progress in personnel development in recent years. From 2020 to 2025, the number of female non -commissioned officers rose by around 45 %, while the number of female officers increased by around 35 %. There has also been an increase of around 5 %for civil servants in the past five years.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner emphasizes: “The tasks at the Armed Forces are as diverse as the professional profiles – from the leadership of military units to technical and logistical activities to the training of young people and medical care.”
Particularly noteworthy is the increasing integration of women into various military and civilian areas. The number of female officers rose from 75 in 2020 in over 100 in 2025. There is also a positive trend in the non -commissioned officers: The number of female non -commissioned officers grew from 228 in 2020 in 2025. In the case of civil servants, the number of male employees rose from around 5450 in 2025 in 2025, while the number of female civil military services rose from over 2160 to around 2360 climb. The number of female apprentices rose from 76 to 94 in the past three years.
There is also a positive trend in the field of military medicine: in 2022, six students started their studies, in 2023 the number rose to ten, which continued by 2024. The number of voluntary reports for military pilot training rose from 226 in 2020 to over 470 in 2024.
With regard to the future, the Bundesheer will continue to rely on a diverse and inclusive personnel structure. The continuous promotion of women, the integration of people with impairments and the improvement of the compatibility of work and family are central components of the personnel strategy. As a result, the Bundesheer is not only positioned as an attractive employer, but also as a modern and sustainable institution for national defense.
