Referee Terje Hage (3rd VR) had to show Jens Lehmann (right) the red card early in the Champions League final.

Oh, Jens Lehmann … Sometimes he drives home drunk from the Oktoberfest, sometimes he saw on roof beams in the neighbor’s garage. These days, his interest is rumored to take over TSV 1860 Munich with an investor group, and it is not entirely certain which of the two sides is more to be regretted. With all the scandals and scandals, it has been a bit forgotten that the man was sometimes a very formidable football player.
In England they still celebrate it as one of the invincibles. Jens Lehmann guarded the goal of that team of FC Arsenal, who won the Premier League uncomfortably 21 years ago and remained without defeat 49 games in a row across the season. He also left traces in the pan -European soccer circus. In May 2006, after the Champions League final in Paris against FC Barcelona, he spoke the meaningful sentence: “I will take this game to the grave.”

In the past, the national champions are simply cup, today Champions League: a staged spectacle and money printing machine of football. Sven Goldmann looks at the coming matchday.
On Wednesday, the Arsenal Football Club will be guest in the French capital. It is about moving into the final of the Champions League, which should be difficult enough after the 0: 1 at home in the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain. But what is this burden against the 2006 trauma? Arsenals Invincibles had already crossed their zenith and ended the Premier League in fourth place, 14 points behind the new Chelsea FC. In Europe, however, it was again enough for a barely expected height flight. Above all, thanks to Jens Lehmann, who kept his box in all K.O. games against Real Madrid, Juventus Turin and FC Villarreal and had a record of over twelve hours without conceding a goal for the final. He then remained unconcerned against Barcelona, which was to a not insignificant part because he was only on the pitch for 20 minutes.
Paris’s drama took its course when Barça’s master of ceremonies Ronaldinho played one of his great and blissless passes in the run of Samuel Eto’o. Lehmann threw himself towards the ball, but only met Eto’o’s foot just outside the penalty area. Barças Ludovic Giuly nudged into the empty goal, but Terje Haug had already blown into his pipe. The Norwegian referee decided on a free kick for the Catalans and dismissal for Lehmann. Ten Londoners took the lead shortly before the end of the first half through a header from Sol Campbell. But in the final phase, substitute Henrik Larsson put on twice what Eto’o and Juliano Belletti used for the decisive goals for the 2-1 win for Barcelona.
Jens Lehmann watched in silence from the stands and traveled to Geneva the training camp of the German national team the next morning. It should be a nice end to the season for him. With a German summer fairy tale and a note in the stocking in the dramatic penalty shootout against Argentina – but that’s a different story.
