In May 2025, the NHM Vienna starts with the implementation for the opening and accessibility of a new entrance area. The construction project of Riegesigger briefly architectsthat emerged from an international selection process in which 18 architectural offices from four countries had participated. The selection commission led the architect and architectural critic Arch. Di Leopold Dungl.
Together with the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, a stakeholder board was set up to integrate all aspects of monument protection, security, urban development and accessibility.

Basically, the areas for visitors are expanded, including shop, café and space for science communication. Two windows towards Maria-Theresien-Platz are expanded to do doors. Replacement rooms must be found for the functions currently available there. The concrete construction phase will take place – also in coordination with the Kunsthistorisches Museum – from 2026 to 2028.

The vertical development of the NHM Vienna, i.e. the installation of a long -awaited lift system, was Hoskins Architects planned and will be planned in 2025 as an early project of the barrier -free input of Vasko & Partner implemented in the form of a lift tower discontinued by the building in the first courtyard of the building.
