WELTjournal: “Japan – Lonely Hearts”
In no industrialized nation do so many people feel lonely as in Japan. The number of single households is growing rapidly; almost half of 20-year-olds and 25 percent of 30 to 40-year-olds have never had a romantic relationship. This also has demographic consequences: the birth rate is falling from year to year; according to forecasts, the Japanese population will have shrunk by a third by 2060. The “WELTjournal” offers an exciting insight into the land of the rising sun, where many men prefer silicone dolls to real partners and where the loneliness business is booming. In Japan there are so-called “solo” weddings in which women celebrate their dream wedding alone without a partner. Dating agencies offer a rental partner to take a walk together, and in bars and pubs, hosts and hostesses sell affection and conversations to lonely customers.

Love is universal and yet so different. Depending on the country and culture, customs and customs, age, social status and religious beliefs, the concept of “love” is interpreted and lived differently. In search of the meaning of love, the filmmaking duo Anđela and Davor Rostuhar traveled around the world for a year and spoke to dozens of couples in around 30 countries. Her journey took her from people in metropolises like Tokyo and New York to closed societies like Saudi Arabia to the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforests. “WELTjournal +” shows her report in which people from a wide variety of cultures talk openly and very personally about love and relationships, marriage and divorce.
