Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital) has announced the 17 finalist projects for the first edition of the “MWCapital Awards: Technologies for A Sustainable Future” in collaboration with B Lab Spain and GSMA Foundry. This new price rescue program recognizes the most innovative projects that use technology to promote the transition to a more sustainable and integrative future. In accordance with the United Nations Agenda 2030 and its goals for sustainable development (SDGS), the initiative promotes creativity, innovation and demonstrable effects and thus supports a responsible and global digital change. The winners will be announced as part of a solemn ceremony on June 12 at Torre Glòries in Barcelona.
For the tender concluded in March, 157 applications from 34 countries were received – expression of the great worldwide interest in technology solutions with social and ecological effects. The finalists from 11 countries represent a wide range of actors, including start-ups, companies, public institutions, non-profit organizations as well as research and university institutions.
From the promotion of sustainability in the energy sector to the protection of biological diversity and the early detection of diseases to combating misinformation – the projects of the finalists are clearly geared towards the goals of the United Nations for Sustainable Development. By using technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data, nanotechnology and the Internet of Things, these solutions show the power of digital transformation when building a more resilient and fairer world.

- Fighting misinformation (Spain): The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid offers a AI-supported tool to combat misinformation that supports journalists, fact checkers and public institutions. (SDG 4 – high quality education)
- Natura 2000 Passport (Portugal): The initiative of Palombar raises awareness of the preservation of biodiversity within the Natura 2000 network. (SDG 15 – Life ashore)
- Nut4Health (Mauritania): The blockchain initiative of Sic4Change combats malnutrition, supports thousands of families in need and strives for a global expansion. (SDG 3 – health and well -being)

Jury and selection process of the MWCapital Awards
In the next phase, a jury of national and international experts in sustainability, technology and social innovation will evaluate the 17 predefined projects to determine one winner per category and the Barcelona Horizon Award.
The participating experts of this first edition include: John HoffmanCEO der GSMA Ltd.; Irene KaggwaGeneral Director of the Uganda Communications Commission and representative of the ITU giga initiative; Antonio TorralbaProfessor on with; and Xavier Sala i MartinProfessor an der Columbia University.

Representatives of authorities and the foundation’s foundation partners will also take part in the selection committee.
This diverse and multidisciplinary group ensures a fair selection process that takes into account the innovation strength, scalability and potential for real effects of each project. The six winners are selected according to their ability to use technologies to cope with social and ecological challenges in accordance with the UN goals for sustainable development. A project is awarded up to 50,000 ꞓ among the six selected winners to test its solution in Barcelona. The potential for local effects in the city is taken into account.
A platform for global visibility and cooperation
The MWCapital Awards will be awarded on June 12, 2025 at Torre Glòries, Barcelona. During the event, the six winning projects will be announced, which are recognized for their innovation strength and their ability to initiate positive changes through technology.
The winners will have the opportunity to present their solutions on the MWC26 in Barcelona in order to receive international visibility and access to strategic partnerships, financing and cooperation opportunities. In addition, the special prize “Barcelona Horizon Award” underlines the tangible effects of the MWCapital Awards within the city, in which the winning team will implement the pilot project. With this initiative, MWCapital would like to stimulate a global movement for responsible innovation and strengthen Barcelona’s role as a hub for technology with positive effects.
