Climate cavity redesign of the outer mahü is progressing!

The redesign work in the outer Mariahilfer Straße is in full swing: the 1.9 km long street, which runs from the belt to Schloßallee, gets a climate in three stages all over the circular renewal, including the bike path and greening elements. Many side alleys are known traffic, including the Palmgasse, in which several trees have been planted today. Soon the entire first section of the outer mahü can be awakened from your sleeping beauty!

“We remove and green all over the city, we are in the middle of a large transformation process and I am happy about the construction progress in the outer Mahü and Palmgasse, where a 20-year-old elm was planted today, an XL tree that will soon donate shadows,” so planning city councilor Ulli Sima.

District leader Dietmar Baurecht: “The construction activity shows that a lot continues in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. The outer Mariahilfer Straße is a lifeline of the 15th district. In the citizen survey, the quality of life was clearly the focus. Now our mahü is made for the future by shading, water, water -free seating and light paving. In addition to the excellent cycling infrastructure, pedestrians will also clearly feel the numerous improvements. ”

“In the increasingly hot summer of the future, more trees will be decisive in densely populated growns for health and quality of life. Our redesign of the outer Mariahilfer Straße creates more space for people on foot and by bike, as well as more cooling greening and quality of stay so that we can feel good for this. Pipal-Leixner.

Following the model of Thaliastraße in neighboring Ottakring, it is built in three sections, off we went for the 1st section from the belt to Clementinengasse last summer. 600 meters of modern, comfortable cycling infrastructure, 18 new trees, seating and cooling elements as well as 800 square meters of new green space make this section a promotion mile in a few months.

Palmgasse residence oasis

However, the redesign not only captures the MAHÜ, which will be an important wheel axle by the 15th district with almost two kilometers length, but also many side streets. One of them is Palmgasse near the Vienna Westbahnhof. It becomes a traffic-calmed area between Mariahilfer Straße and Robert-Hamerling-Gasse, in which the passage only remains for cycling.

The redesign is almost finished: level -like paving and consumption -free seating will soon make your stay in the gray side street so far. A drinking hydrant and a water feature with floor levels of spray nozzles provide the necessary cooling during the hot summer months. Green beds and new trees contribute to improving the microclimate, one of which is a 20-year-old elm.

Integration of the residents

Covering the people from the start was very important in the city and district of this project. In September 2023, a citizen survey in Grätzl around the Outer Mariahilfer Straße, the results flowed into the redesign. The great desire for more quality of life and well -being was fulfilled – the fact that the new concept is well received is already shown in the fully redesigned areas, where seating is used with great joy for a short break.

1. Stage to Clementinengasse: well -being mile brings a lot of greening and cooling

In the first phase of construction, the outer Mariahilfer Straße is completely redesigned from the belt to Clementinengasse. The road is run out of town as a one -way. This creates more space for active mobility such as cycling and walking. The tram keeps its own track body and is not slowed down by cars. A structurally separate, 3.5 meter wide two-direction cycle path will ensure convenient and safe conditions for cyclists in the 1st section over 600 meters.

18 new trees are planted and complement the existing stock of 31 trees, several high -towel bushes and many green oases – more than 800 square meters of additional green space are created in this section. 22 seating invite you to linger, 14 fog steles and 3 floor nozzles ensure cooling in the hot months. In addition, many new bike parking spaces are made available. By one -way tour, the Grätzl around Clementinengasse will be significantly traffic -calmed in the future (after completion of the 1st construction phase).

Strong widened sidewalks with integrated green elements rain to stroll. Following the model of Thaliastraße, the rigid separation of the lane and walking areas is also broken up in the outer Mariahilfer Straße by leveling. A curb only 3 to 5 centimeters high separates the road out of the city or parking bays out of the city. The sidewalks themselves are predominantly preferred. This results in a sidewalk width of up to 5 meters and plenty of space for new lounge areas and micro -open spaces.

Fair division of the street space

By redirecting the street space and the associated one -way, the wishes of the residents can be fulfilled according to more green space and quality of stay. There is more space for cycling and foot traffic. The tram lines 52 and 60, which carry around 20,000 people a day, can continue to drive freely on their own track body.

Vienna’s cycle path offensive is in full swing

The large Viennese cycle path offensive is still in full swing! At the end of the legislative period over 250 projects and almost 100 km in the main bike path network, the progress coalition has already been implemented or launched and has already invested around EUR 130 million in the expansion of the Viennese cycling infrastructure. More than 50 km of cycling infrastructure has also been implemented in the district network. The intensive efforts pay off: the number of cyclists is constantly increasing. The proportion of the paths that are covered by bike rose to 11 % in 2024 (in 2019 it was 7 %), as the modal split survey 2024 shows. All information about the cycle path projects on bicyclewien.at
