Vienna: Hotspot for international breast cancer expertise

Around 5,000 national and international experts meet each other at the Austria Center Vienna for the 19th St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference (SGBCC). The top -class conference offers updates on all relevant aspects of the treatment of early breast cancer (EBC, Early Breast Cancer), lectures on the current state of science and discussions on explosive topics. As part of the SGBCC, the most important clinical recommendations for the treatment of patients with early breast cancer are developed, the St. Gallen breast cancer consensus guidelines. In addition, the focus is on networking the Austrian with the international health community. In Vienna, the WHO-IS-WHO meets the breast cancer expert for the SGBCC. Burstein, MD, PhD from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institutes Boston and professor awaited at the Harvard Medical School, who acts as a moderator of the consensus conference. The Head of the Scientific Committee is Prof. Dr. Giuseppe Curigliano from Milan, who is recognized internationally for his research on new cancer therapies for the treatment of breast cancer and recently elected future president of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO). Worldwide recommendations for the treatment of early breast cancer

The St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference (SGBCC) of the Foundation for Oncological Training and Congresses (Sonk), with its President, Prof. Christoph Senn, is one of the most important platforms for the exchange of the latest knowledge in breast cancer research and treatment, with a special focus on the treatment of breast cancer in the early stage. “The founding idea behind the SGBCC is the international collaboration at the highest level with the aim of determining practical recommendations for everyday clinical life,” says Prof. Walter Weber, chief physician and medical department head at the University Hospital Basel, founder of the successful oncoplastic Breast Consortium (OPBC) and member of the scientific committee of the SGBCC. An important milestone in this way was the establishment of the “St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Consensus Guidelines ”, a pioneering framework that still shapes the treatment of breast cancer patients worldwide and sets practical recommendations for everyday clinical life. Based on the current state of breast cancer research, the knowledge of the leading oncological networks, the Amercian Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), specific instructions for practice are created. “Work is used with the method of the consensus conference,” adds Weber. International speakers from large breast cancer research groups and centers will take part in this. “The discussion among colleagues before the minutes of the St. Gallen breast cancer consensus guidelines is always an excellent opportunity to optimally adapt and re-evaluate the latest standards and therapy measures for patients.” says Prof. Dr. Sibylle Loibl, the chairman of the GBG – German Breast Group, Managing Director of GBG Research GmbH, Professor (APL) at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main and member of the scientific committee of the SGBCC.

The conference in Vienna ends with the renowned St. Gallen consensus session, in which the recommendations of the world’s leading experts formulate for the treatment of early breast cancer and published in the renowned journal “Annals of Oncology”. “For a few days, the international breast cancer world looks to Vienna when researchers from oncology define the new guidelines for the diagnosis and therapy of early breast cancer. These guidelines will significantly influence clinical practice in over 150 countries, ”says Gnant.
