Rudolf Egelhofer became known to a larger public for the first time on January 10, 1919 when he entered the rooms of the Bavarian Prime Minister Kurt Eisner during a rally in Munich. He had had some revolutionaries arrested on the same day and even signed the arrest warrants personally. The alleged breach of the peace was now followed. A angry crowd was pulled in front of Eisner’s apartment to demand the release of the prisoners.
Simon Schaub describes this episode in his book “The short spring of the Räter Republic”, in which the history of the failed November revolution is also told: “Armed soldiers stand at the gates, Eisner cannot see.” When a sailor on the building facade climbed up to the first floor, where Eisner’s study is located. The former marine fanist Rudolf Egelhofer penetrates through the window. Immediately storm up, but Kurt Eisner appeased. After a short change of words, Eisner and Egelhofer appear and announce the release of the prisoners.
“With an iron hand, Egelhofer actually carried out the disarmament of the bourgeoisie, with restless energy he ensured the armament of the proletariat.”
Erich Wollenberg über Rudolf Egelhofer
When the radical left, after the murder of Kurt Eisner, calls out the rigid republic, Rudolf Egelhofer plays a central role – first as a city commander in Munich, then as the senior commander of the Red Army. After the victory of the reaction, he was severely abused by right -wing freecorps and shot on May 1, 1919 in the Munich residence without legal proceedings. His grave on the Munich north cemetery (grave No. 6 in section 105, row 5) is to be leveled in the foreseeable future. The “Plenum R”, a Bavarian link, which keeps up with the councilor, now wants to organize the extension. 84 euros per year are needed, with another ten -year use. The donation collection – the corresponding account is still organized – would be connected with events on the work of Rudi Egelhofer in the Bavarian Räter Republic.
The life of this revolutionary has not yet been researched. Author and filmmaker Klaus Gietinger even sees this for a dissertation. But who was Rudi Egelhofer? In any case, he was an anti -fascist before there was fascism in Germany. The shooting of members of the Thule Society, a Völkisch-Rassist secret covenant with a swastika in the emblem, Egelhofer was charged. According to his colleague Hilde Kramer, he has never been proven that the command of execution came from him.

His comrade and Rotarmist Erich Wollenberg described him as a brave young sailor. “With an iron hand, Egelhofer actually carried out the disarmament of the bourgeoisie, with restless energy he caused the armament of the proletariat.” However, because the government transactions took up all usable communists, Egelhofer had to rely on elements that happened to fall into his hands or recommended by someone. Wollenberg calls him a “childishly trust -related soldier (s) of the revolution” – which with his fighters stormed the Munich main station, which was held by the white, the enemies of the Symptoment Republic on Palm Sunday. What a life! Egelhofer’s final resting place is probably also his first.
Also remarkable, it was now said among the active people, “how invigorating the Egelhofer grave on our plenary r.”.
