EU Commission is planning sharp rules for food imports

St. Pölten (ots) –

With the presentation of its comprehensive vision for European agricultural and nutritional policy, the EU agricultural commissioner Christophe, like the EU health commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, will make a strong sign for European farmers a few days ago. In the future, imported foods should meet the same high quality standards as domestic products. In particular, imports that are burdened with pesticides or hormones banned in the EU should be prevented in the future.

A significant impulse came from Lower Austria: at the recent exchange with representatives of the farmers’ association-including Lower Austria Chamber of Agriculture, President Johannes Schmuckenschlager and Lower Austria Bauernbund Chair LH-StV. Stephan Pernkopf – Hansen was illustrated the importance of fair competitive conditions for peasant family businesses at the farm of Lorenz Mayr, Weinviertler Akkerbauer and Vice President of LK Lower Austria.

“Same rules for everyone”

Schmuckenschlager welcomes Hansen’s plans: “Our farmers as well as the consumers deserve this clarity. The same standards for everyone provide security and ensure fairness in the competition – a central demand for the farmers’ association is thus met. ” At the same time, he demands a quick implementation: “These plans will have to be anchored in the coming months. The constructive partnership with Hansen is a profit for the rural families in the EU. ”

In addition to measures against unfair food imports, Hansen today wants to present further relief for Europe’s farmers in his vision. This includes the simplification of agricultural funding, the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles, better protection against unfair trading practices, better approval procedures for pesticides and the securing of agricultural production by young farmers.

EU agricultural commissioner Hansen presents vision for the future of agriculture

Already on Monday Christophe Hansen presented the key points of his vision during a visit to Düsseldorf and made it clear: “The farmers earn our respect, they create safe and high -quality foods and have to achieve an appropriate income with their work – because it must be worth it, farmer to be. It has to be worthwhile to have a good product and respect the environment. Otherwise nobody will take over this job. As far as the GAP is concerned, we will ensure that it is easier and more targeted that it finds correct balance between incentives, investments and regulation and is implemented for farmers without excessive bureaucracy. The farmers have to feel a real difference when it comes to their paperwork. “
