A ghost is about in Europe. No, not that of communism, which is known to flutter against an increasingly violent blistering wind in these times. The fighters for a fairer world may seem comforting that at least the Ancien régime of football capitalism crises. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, two undercuts with Arab oil-billion, underlays, had missed the playoffs of the Champions League for a hair.
This is not so easy because the organizing UEFA has granted 24 teams access to the next round since this season – so that none of their attractive circus horses tears the hurdle of qualification. And yet City and PSG had to tremble until the last preliminary round game. The sports fans from Manchester only drove the ghost of the failure in the second half of the final game against FC Brugge’s competition, which is hardly fundamentally financial.

In the past, the national champions are simply cup, today Champions League: a staged spectacle and money printing machine of football. Sven Goldmann looks at the coming matchday.
This bad performance would have brought City’s Catalan Maestro Pep Guardiola together with his former employer Bayern Munich in the upcoming playoff round. It then became Real Madrid, which Guardiola was not particularly delightful, but caused a loud breath in Munich. A duel with city would have been sporty, but would have blown to Bavaria. Instead, we go to Celtic Park after Glasgow on Wednesday. There is a great atmosphere there, but Celtic Glasgow does not trigger afraid in Munich with all appreciation. It was different. Back then, in November 2003, when Europe’s great powers, heavily troubled.
When Bayern presented in Celtic Park a good 21 years ago, they were all about everything. A defeat in the penultimate preliminary round game would have meant that. Celtic’s team was blessed with manageable quality, but a lot of passion was blessed. The Swede Henrik Larsson whirled up Bayern with great fun, and only with a little luck and Oliver Kahn was enough to go 0-0. Bavaria’s manager Uli Hoeneß said: »Now the others have to dress warm again and be afraid of us. Anyone who survives in this stadium, in this atmosphere, is good for many surprises. ”Because the last group game was won against Anderlecht and Celtic lost in Lyon, the Scots and Bavaria were on.
There were still a few surprises, but they did not fail as Hoeneß had imagined in Glasgow. In the Champions League, FC Bayern failed in the round of 16 at the old favorite enemy Real Madrid. Real, in turn, flew out against AS Monaco in the quarterfinals. Because the previous year’s finalists Juventus Turin and AC Milan also said goodbye, the arena at Schalke was the final of the outsiders, which FC Porto 3 won against Monaco. The European Football Circus has never designed its program so surprisingly since then.
