Vienna (OTS) The automotive group Stellantis announced in the summer of 2023 that it would be closing its long-standing location in Vienna, the Opel plant in Vienna-Aspern. The works council and the company then agreed, together with waff and AMS Vienna, to set up a corporate foundation. City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke: “Together we managed to set up a work foundation for the employees. This instrument provides them with training and further education, a bridging period that secures their livelihood and thus a new start in their careers.

The new OPEL 2 outplacement company foundation is endowed with around 2.7 million euros. Up to 210 Opel Wien GmbH employees can join the foundation by the end of 2026. For up to four years of training and further education, you receive foundation unemployment benefit that secures your livelihood. Based on experience, it is expected that many of the current 260 employees will be able to move directly to new employment in the period until the plant is closed.

The waff has been in contact with the works council and the company since the closure plans were announced and is currently informing interested employees about the company foundation’s offer.

As early as 2018, as part of the recent workforce reductions at Opel Vienna, a joint corporate foundation was set up by the company, the works council, waff and AMS Vienna. 347 employees have joined this foundation. Most were able to start new employment with new or additional qualifications.

The collaboration with Stellantis is extremely satisfactory for everyone involved. The fact that the common goal of trade unions and employer representatives is to provide those affected with a secure future with the help of the Foundation’s offering shows a strong commitment to social responsibility and support. Together with the AMS Vienna, a new foundation decision was also easily obtained for the current job creation. The employees affected by the closure of the plant can use the foundation’s offerings to further their education, for example in the areas of technology, logistics or the social sector, and pursue a new career path.
