There are currently considerable tensions between the hospital operating company (KHBG) and the medical association. The trigger is contradictory representations about the situation in Vorarlberg’s hospitals. This dispute shows the major challenges in the healthcare system.
SPÖ club chairman Mario Leiter points out that all other professional groups at hospitals are being overlooked in this debate: the administrative staff, the staff in medical-technical professions, cleaning staff, etc. work in the background to ensure that the hospitals function. However, a salary reform has been pending in this area for a long time, the SPÖ leader notes.
Finally implement salary reform
“Without these people, our health system would come to a standstill,” explains SPÖ club chairman Mario Leiter. “They maintain the system, are indispensable for everyday life in our hospitals and do outstanding work under often difficult conditions. But their work is not sufficiently rewarded – the promised salary reforms for these professional groups are still pending.”
Respect for the performance of the staff
Leiter urges those responsible to also focus on these employees and to implement the long overdue adjustment to their salaries. “It is unacceptable that these employees, who often work in the background, are repeatedly ‘forgotten’. The current debate also shows this. Your achievements deserve respect, recognition and fair remuneration – not at some point, but now.”
For movement in salary reform
At the same time, Leiter appeals to the responsible state health councilor Martina Rüscher: “Madam state councilor, I know how important stable and functioning health care is to you. Make sure that there is movement on the salary reform. Together we can find a solution that benefits both staff and patients.”
Leader offers support
Mario Leiter invites all relevant players to a constructive dialogue: “The challenges in our hospitals can be solved, but only together. Let us take on this responsibility – for the benefit of everyone. The SPÖ is always ready to actively contribute its expertise in the areas of health and good working conditions to the process.”
