Customs stops Bulgarian minibus with 60,300 cigarettes
Vienna (OTS) –

At the end of November 2024, customs officers discovered a total of 60,300 cigarettes in a minibus with a Bulgarian license plate. The 24-year-old Bulgarian driver and his passenger were selected for a customs check on the A4 motorway heading towards Vienna.

When questioned, the two people stated that she was carrying eight cartons of cigarettes. During the inspection, a total of 301.5 cartons of cigarettes with a domestic sales price of 16,697 euros were seized. The tobacco products were hidden in cardboard packaging for baked goods. The boxes were opened at the back, which was glued by the manufacturer, the original contents were removed, then filled with loose cigarette packs and finally glued again.

Finally, the driver admitted that the cigarettes were intended for resale to friends and acquaintances in the Netherlands. Since the cigarettes were of Bulgarian origin, they would have had to be taxed when transported to Austria. Taxes of 10,612 euros would have been incurred for the import of the cigarettes. The cigarettes were confiscated on site and criminal financial investigations were initiated. In addition to the confiscation of the confiscated cigarettes, there is a risk of a fine of up to twice the amount of the tax evaded.

Finance Minister Gunter Mayr: “Thanks to the commitment and expertise of the customs officers, another case of illegal tobacco smuggling was uncovered. We are taking decisive action to protect our society not only from financial losses, but also from the particularly serious health risks that smuggled tobacco products often pose in addition to smoking, which is already harmful to health.”
