New highland for innovation
Located at the southern tip of Zhuhai, Hengqin is separated from Macau by a narrow strip of water. Since its establishment, the cooperation zone has served as an important platform for promoting adequate economic diversification in Macao.
It has enabled Macau to develop industries such as high-end manufacturing, traditional Chinese medicine, financial services and cultural tourism. Today, the cooperation zone hosts 30 technological innovation platforms at national and provincial levels, 268 national high-tech enterprises and 41 specialized and sophisticated enterprises at provincial level.
Currently, the cooperation zone has established innovation platforms such as the Macao-Hengqin Youth Entrepreneurship Valley and attracted several innovative resources such as industrial-academic research bases of Macao universities and high-tech enterprises and talents.
President Xi praised the progress in the cooperation zone, saying that the integration between Hengqin and Macao has gradually improved and that the role of the cooperation zone in supporting Macao’s economic diversification is becoming increasingly important.
In recent years, the Macao Special Administrative Region has also promoted the implementation of large-scale sci-tech projects and important local innovation platforms, becoming a new technological platform for global innovation and a gathering place for talents.
“Macao Science 1” is the first space research satellite program jointly developed by mainland China and Macau. The satellite has the highest accuracy in detecting geomagnetic fields in China and will significantly improve the country’s magnetic monitoring in space.
During his visit to the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) on Thursday, Xi said the satellite is an example of deepening high-tech cooperation between Macau and the mainland and showcases the outstanding innovative and creative capabilities of Macau’s science and technology sector.
Promoting young talents
The Macau Special Administrative Region has become an ideal location for entrepreneurs thanks to its open business environment and the opportunities offered by the cooperation zone.
Today, Hengqin is home to industrial and academic research demonstration centers of the University of Macau and MUST. Four state key laboratories in Macau have established branches in the zone, promoting the transformation and industrialization of the university’s scientific and technological achievements.
As of November 2024, Hengqin had launched 898 entrepreneurial projects for young people from Hong Kong and Macao, including 815 projects from Macau.
At a meeting with Macao residents living in Hengqin and young Macao entrepreneurs who have established start-ups in the zone, President Xi emphasized that the development of Hengqin provides great opportunities for Macao youth to achieve their goals, and expressed the hope that more young people from Macau will build remarkable careers there.
