Drought, heavy rain, mudslides or floods: extreme weather events in Europe reached historic highs in 2024. This year is likely to be the hottest on record, reports the EU climate change service Copernicus. In the Alpine region, climate change is causing an increase in specific natural hazards. The Inter-Alpine Natural Hazards Conference (INAC) from May 5th to 7th, 2025 at the Congress Innsbruck will, for the first time, provide a European platform for interdisciplinary exchange between science and practice on natural hazards in the Alpine region. Registration is now possible.
Increase in extreme weather in the Alpine region
“Climate change triggers natural hazards in the Alpine region and requires adapted protective measures,” explains Robert Hofmann from the University of Innsbruck. Intense rainfall and abrupt temperature changes cause mudflows, rockfalls and other mass movements. Alison Evans (WPMMW) refers to avalanches, floods and the consequences of glacier melting: “Warming is accelerating the melting of glaciers and permafrost, which threatens previously unexposed areas.”
European platform for exchange between research and industry
INAC aims to strengthen the exchange between science and practice. “With INAC we want to help protect the habitat and infrastructure in the Alps from natural hazards as best as possible,” says Christian MayerhoferManaging Director of the Congress Messe Innsbruck. Cédric Moscatelli (infra2050) adds: “Close collaboration between researchers and operational staff is necessary to develop robust risk management methods.” In addition to research and prevention, civil protection plays an important role. Willigis Gallmetzer from the Bozen Avalanche Warning Center emphasizes: “Efficient early warning systems and greater risk awareness can significantly reduce damage.”
