BMF warns of internet fraudsters

Vienna (OTS) –

The Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) warns against fake emails that are sent to citizens in the name of the BMF. The fraudulent emails with the subject “Processing of your refund has begun.” contain the information that the recipients will receive a refund of 500.00 euros and should check or provide their credit card details for this purpose.

The BMF continually warns against this scam.

The hyperlinks contained lead to fake websites in the style of FinanzOnline, which ask you to check or enter personal data, especially account information.

The BMF emphasizes that these are internet fraud attempts and that the emails sent are fakes.

Information from the BMF generally takes the form of notices and is delivered by post or to the FinanzOnline Databox. The BMF never asks citizens to submit personal data such as passwords, credit card details or account information.

Therefore, if you receive such a phishing email or an email with similar content, it is most likely an internet fraud attempt.

  • Under no circumstances should you follow the instructions contained therein!
  • Do not click on any links or files contained therein!
  • Under no circumstances should you disclose personal information such as passwords, credit card details or account information!
  • The BMF recommends deleting such emails immediately!

Further information about the fraudsters’ scams, the characteristics of fraud attempts and necessary security measures can be found in our folder “Beware of fraud! Don’t give internet fraudsters a chance.” The folder is available on the BMF website Download ready and available for withdrawal in all tax offices.
