“Every more hand that lends a hand is a welcome help,” says Walter Veit, President of the Austrian Hoteliers Association, welcoming the draft for an increase in the seasonal hotel quotas by 490 to 4,985 by Economics Minister Dr. Martin Kocher and Tourism State Secretary Mag. Susanne Kraus-Winkler. Harsh criticism came from the industry at the time it came into force: On January 1st, in the middle of the season: “No one really understands that!” says Veit.
Veit: We could set the entire annual quota three times from one day to the next
In general, it is time for a reform of the outdated quota system. According to the Wirtschaftsbund job monitor, the number of vacancies in Austrian tourism is currently 14,602: “So we could adjust the annual quota three times practically overnight. But Austria does not allow people who can and want to work into the country. Business falls through and sales, taxes and social security contributions are lost on a large scale. If the next government wants economic growth and additional revenue without burdening the population and the economy, removing the quota cap would be an excellent approach!”
